Aerographite
Materials have shaped our past because of how much they helped us progress. We started out using rocks as tools but we now have the ability to drill out an entire mountain with a machine. In the future it's up in the air as to what could be made that could help us but it will guaranteed be better than what we currently used. In the past we used to use crude tools made out of stone that weren't the most helpful. We then progressed to iron tools which helped us progress even further, we then started using steel. Now we have carbon fibre and materials such as aerographite that are stronger than steel but much lighter. What the future holds is unknown to us at the moment, but in the near future it will be a reality and we won't ever look back.
There are a few different ways that molecules can be arranged that can affect its properties, for instance there are structures that are crystalline that form specific shapes. Only specific bonds can form a crystalline shape and crystalline shapes tend to be stronger than an amorphous shape. Particles that don't have a crystalline structure are typically weaker than those that are crystalline. Another factor that can affect a material properties is the way that it is bonded. An ionically bonded material tends to be stronger than a covalently bonded material, which tends to be more brittle. There are many different ways that a materials properties can be affected and these are just a few.
