Leading up to this project the main thing we learned was what a "sense of place" was and how energy effects that, as the title of the project would suggest. We learned about this by listening to guest speakers. Guest speakers, although not the largest part of the project, I found it to be the most beneficial part of the learning process because there were four speakers all with different perspectives on energy production and what it is doing to the environment. Along with guest speakers another part that was beneficial was writing inspiration journals. It helped get thoughts flowing and overall I got a better understanding of what was expected from the project.
As I say in my essay and in my artist statement, I have become more environmentally conscientious due to this project because of what I learned. Prior to the project I didn't care about the environment or what we were doing, but after listening to the guest speakers, doing research in chemistry, and watching videos in humanities my perspective changed quickly. I learned that it wasn't that I didn't care, it was that I was uneducated about the issue and that I needed to learn more. In the beginning of the project I wasn't sure what I would possibly do for my project. By the end of the project it seemed obvious that I needed to write about what I learned through the project and why other people need to care about how we produce our energy. I brought in my chemistry knowledge for certain parts of my essay, but for the parts where I talk about specific numbers I did the math myself after doing research. I'm glad that my perspective changed from this project because it clearly needed to change.
I was proud of both my visual and my essay because I feel like both of them reflect my change in perception while informing the reader or person looking at if of why there is an issue. I feel like this was good because the way that my perspective changed is, in my opinion, the best thing that could have come out of this project. I have clearly shown growth as a person throughout this project and I am proud to say that because I needed to change. Granted, I would have never said that a few weeks ago because I didn't see the issue with what we were doing, but I realize now that it's people with my old attitude that are causing the issues to occur. In my essay I talk about the amount of pollution created from coal power plants alone in the United States and I say that it is an absurd number and that that needs to change as soon as it possibly can. A few weeks ago I wouldn't have cared, I would have seen the number and though "could be worse," before I thought anything else. I'm proud of both of my pieces and how they show my perspective shifting.
I enjoyed the project because I learned everything about how we produce power and the impacts that it has on the environment and us. Without this project I don't think I would have learned this at all. I may have learned it in the future when it's too late, but it's clear that change needs to happen now. One thing I didn't like about the project was that I didn't see a strong connection between the humanities and chemistry portions of the project. I realize that they are on the same topic, but that doesn't mean that they are connected. It would have been interesting if we had talked more about the difference of opinions of people on the issue. We talked about it for a day or two, but that to me seems important to learn and understand. The connection between the classes seemed to be lacking, but besides that the project was very beneficial to me.
