El Periodismo
The point of this project was to look at recent events in a Spanish speaking country and create a newspaper. One person wrote an article on pop culture, one person created two ads, and the third person, me, wrote about a current event. We chose to focus on Colombia for this project and it actually had an interesting event that was going to happen. The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, was going to go to Washington D.C. to talk to President Obama about diplomatic relations. I thought that this was interesting and I chose to write about this. This project took place over both semesters. The first semester was focused on the independent research and the second was focused on group work and bringing everything together. My job in the second semester was to format the newspaper.
I connected to this project because it was Colombia. I have a brother that is related to me by some complicated process that has a dad that is from Colombia and he has said that he wants to take me there one day. I think that Colombia is an interesting country and I have chosen to focus on it for any project in Spanish class that I can. I have learned quite a bit about it over my past two years in Spanish that I think could be beneficial to me if I were to ever go to Colombia. I enjoyed the research portion of this project the most because I got to read many stories of things that were happening in Colombia and I think that I got a good feel for what is happening in the country right now.
This project was difficult because we had to write a news article that was based off of another news article that we got the story from all while being translated to Spanish. Although I didn't have too much of a problem with this it was still the hardest part of the project just because it was writing. It turned out that I didn't do so well on it and I got a fairly bad grade, a C, on it. When I was doing this project I had issues finding a news story and it was getting to the point where I started to panic because of the lack of progress I had made on the project.
During this project I learned that I work well with other people when I am the person that has to put everything together at the end of the project. For this project I had to put together the final newspaper. When I was putting the newspaper together I quickly realized that the program that was recommended that we used was absolutely terrible. It was organized terribly and I remembered a program that I had used my freshman year as an extension in my digital arts class, and it turned out that this program was much better. I worked well and problem solved when I had issues and still got the project done when it was due, even though I had missed four days of class time.
This knowledge and process was important because it taught us about Spanish speaking countries and things that were happening within them all while helping us refine our writing process. I had originally written my article fairly quickly but because of this I didn't do so well overall. It was important because it helped us with our writing, which I know for me at least is what helps me learn Spanish easier because I don't like to speak in Spanish all that much.
